Sim's Place Prawn Noodles

Situated at Bendemeer Market and Food Centre, there is a prawn noodle stall which is always seen with a long queue at most times. They usually finish selling the prawn noodles after lunch time.

I like this prawn noodles because you are able to substitute prawns for something else. I usually prefer to have pork liver and intestine. If you are a pigs' organ lover like me, then do opt for this instead of the usual prawn.

Since it is famous for it's prawn noodles, therefore I ordered the prawn ones to post it instead. You can see from the colour of the soup how thick and rich the taste will be. Yes it does looks very plain because there is only prawn, beansprout and noodles. Don't be deceive by the looks of it. I have ordered the prawn noodle soup but add another 50 cents to get an additional bowl of soup. It taste good by adding in some chilli powder too.

Hai Di Lao 海底捞

I think there is no need for me to introduce this place as it is already very famous and I believe many people have already have a taste of it. And if you have not, please call them to make an advance reservation at least 1 to 2 weeks earlier if you plan to have it on a weekend.

This is a place not only for the delicious steamboat soup base but also for the almost flawless service. They provide you with free snacks and drinks outside the restaurant if you have to queue up. They also set up little tables and chairs for you to sit. And if your wait is a little too long, they also have some card games to keep you occupied. For the ladies, you can even have free manicure done while waiting for your table to be ready. There is also a kids play area where parents can leave their children to keep themselves occupied.

So there will be one staff that will attend to about 4-5 tables at the same time and they will make you feel really comfortable and provide you almost everything you will need to prepare yourself for the steamboat. From a simple rubber band for girls to tie up their hair to a napkin to prevent stains on your close to ziplog specially meant for your handphones so they don't get dirty. I was here with my family few months ago and they even offered a baby cot for my baby nephew to sleep in!!! I was totally amazed!

So their menu is an Ipad. You just have to select what you want on the Ipad, submit  your orders and they will be brought to you very shortly.

The soup base that I have chose was Ma La and Chicken. I have been here 3 times and each time I just have the same soup base. You won't regret these choices!

There is a bar nearby where you can start making and mixing your own sauce according to your liking.

Mine was simply mushroom sauce mixed with oyster sauce and sesame oil.

Cuttlefish Paste

Free tau huay for dessert. You can take as many as you want. And they just taste like lao ban dou hua!!!

So the staff started to cook the fish paste for us.

That's the price for 2 person. It all depends on what you order of course. And the photos shown are not all that we have ordered. There were more. This is definitely the best steamboat I have ever tried!

Chock Full of Beans

This cafe is hidden far in the east and we made a trip down specially upon seeing some really cute coffee art about the coffee we made there. So for the first time in my life, I came to Changi Village in the morning.

We didn't need to wait for too long before we can get a good seat outside. Luckily the weather was pretty fine that day when we went.

So we asked the staff what kind of coffee art can we choose from for our coffee. She said if we have any specific choice, we can let her know and she can get the barrister to try to do it. And if we do not have anything in mind, they will just do any random picture on it.

So we chose Spongebob...

And Minion for our morning flat white!!! It is really cute and we took many pictures of them and almost cannot bear to drink them. This is something that can really brighten one's morning! Unfortunately, the coffee was so-so to me. It's not as thick and fragrant as what I expected. But the cartoons did score some extra points.

Strawberry Shortcake

We didn't request for the doraemon deco on the plate that served the cake. If I had known that I can choose, I would have requested for something else. haha! Anyway the spongecake was pretty soft and spongy. The cream is sweet and thick. But nothing really special about it.

Price: $$6.50

Cubano (Ham and Cheese) Sandwhich

The filling consists of Parma ham, roasted pork,, swiss cheese, mustard, pickles and Aioli sauce. The wholemeal bread was soft and nicely toasted. It looks really plain from the outside, but there is actually a thick layer of parma ham in between the breads. It taste good with the melted cheese and it's really filling too for breakfast.

Price: $13

Portobello Benedict

The poached eggs are really runny inside and they are done just nice. Portobello are grilled and goes really well with the egg and the homemade toaste. B likes it but I am not really a mushroom fan, so this will not be my choice to start a day.

Price: $12

I do think that the price is slightly steep considering that the location is way out of town. Other than the Cubano sandwich, I would say that the rest are just pretty normal and it wouldn't be very worth it to travel all the way down. But if you are nearby, I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out... especially the coffee art.

Kheng Nam Lee (Teochew Porridge)

Teochew porridge is known for it's variety of simple dishes that you can choose from. And when it comes to food, I love variety!

This is the "Havelock Road Teochew Porridge" and often recommended by the late night clubbers. Lots of Zoukers come here to have their supper after a long partying night. It has been around for the longest time and I have heard about it many years ago when I was still young partying. I remember coming here once many years ago after clubbing but I don't have any recollection of what have I tried previously. Many years later, I decided to visit again as I was having craving for Teochew Porridge.

They have a wide selection of dishes and I can't help but to keep ordering.

Spicy Bar Chor (Minced Meat)

This is the perfect dish to go with plain porridge.

Fried beansprout

I love soggy beansprout. The soggier, the better. It's soggy and salty. Good to go with plain porridge as well.

Steamed egg, Braised egg and Braised Tau Pok

Fish Cake

I believed this is made by them and it doesn't tasted anything like the usual fishcake that we find with the fish ball noodles. The texture is soft and its a bit like fish paste. Really good!

Zhen Zhen Porridge (Maxwell Market)

When people ask "what is there to eat at Maxwell Market?". Many will reply "The Porridge"! So to be frank, I haven't tried this porridge before and so when I was at Maxwell market the other day I decided to give it a shot.

I hate to queue but when it comes to hawker food, my patience level doubled. I queued for almost 20 minutes to get a taste of the porridge and to be frank I was disapointed.

鱼生 (Raw Fish)

They have it in different sizes of serving. I bough the $3 serving. And for those of you who love spring onion, they do add them in. I have requested not to have any for mine thus it may seem like it lacks the greenery. It was pretty ok for this but I have tasted much better ones.

I have ordered chicken porridge but when I started eating, I realized the auntie has given me fish porridge instead. I didn't want to kick a fuss and didn't want to get an exchange because I don't know how long more I need to wait and I was famished!

So firstly I didn't like fish porridge and thus it was already a turn off. Secondly I don't see anything special about the porridge. These are all my personal opinions. I believe everybody has different taste and I am sure there are people who love it thus explain the long queue. But this is just not for me. I will not queue even 5 minutes for this.

But it is cheap costing only $2.50 for quite a big bowl. And if you want to add egg, that will be $3.
