House @ Dempsey

If you have frequent Dempsey, this shouldn't be a difficult place to locate. However if you do not visit Dempsey often, you may not be able to find the place easily because it is not located together with the rest of the better known hang out places such as Ben and Jerry or even The Prime Society. You have to walk down a staircase before seeing the place.

It is really spacious. So you won't find the next table sitting just an arm length away from you. This does give you some privacy and personal space which I personally value.

The fries is a MUST ORDER here. It comes in many different flavors. So if you come in a big group, it is good to order different flavors to try.

Truffle Fries

I came with 2 others, so we wouldn't have extra spaces in our stomachs to occupy too much carbo. Thus we ordered our favorite truffle fries instead. It's pretty good.

Price: $11

Celeriac Soup

I didn't know what celeriac is and so I googled it. It is also called the rooted turnip celery. It looks a bit like turnip too. But anyway it is a form of root vegetable. There is a seared scallop in the soup and it is topped with some bacon bits which give it a tint of saltiness.

Price: $12

Smoked Turkey Pizza

My friend recommended this pizza and indeed, this is the first time that I am eating pizza with blueberries. Among all the berries, blueberries are my favorite.  The pizza is really thin, which is a good thing to me. The crust is extremely crispy as well. So there isn't too much flour and it wouldn't occupy too much stomach space. I was quite skeptical about how it will taste. I mean imagine ham with strawberries on a pizza??? Surprisingly, it tasted pretty good. As the smoked turkey ham is salty, the blueberries neutralized it with their sweetness. So it's like a sweet and salted taste, just like salted caramel. Of course the berries are not as sweet as caramel does.

Price: $27

Roasted Chilean Cod Fish

The cod fish is roasted accompanied with some sweet date sauce. It comes with a seared Chorizo. I'm not a fan of cod fish but tried a small mouth of the fish. The texture is good but I didn't like the fish oil taste and feeling. However according to B, who loves cod fish, this is quite delicious.

Price: $29

Jamaican Jerk Pork Tenderloin

I was expecting a big piece of pork tenderloin to be served but was surprised to see the layout of this dish. The pork tenderloin is served in 4 small slices but of a reasonable thickness. Added with some white fruity chutney. Grilled vegetables and garlic potatoes served  by the side. I would prefer a salty sauce instead of a fruity one for this dish. And the pork are not exactly tender. It's actually kind of tough.

Price: $27

Victor's Kitchen

Before I start with the review for Victor's Kitchen, I have to apologize for the crappy photos taken. As we were in a rush to somewhere, I forgot to take picture of how the dim sum looks like before we started eating. Thus by the time we remember, we have already eaten some.

Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun

It comes in 3. And yes the sweet and salted custard oozes out when you bite on the bun. The bun is soft and well steamed. It is good but nothing special in  my opinion.

Price: $4

Steam chicken with Chinese wine

This is not the usual dish that we see from most restaurants. So other than the usual steam pork ribs, they have this steam chicken. I quite like it as the meat is well marinated with a tint of wine, steamed with wolf berries.

Price: $3

Scallop, Sausages carrot cake with XO sauce

Ever since dim joy closed down, I was unable to find a place where steam carrot cake is served. They have it here and it is good. Although it does look a little dry from this picture but it is not dry at all. It comes with a small serving of XO sauce which is served separately and yes they do go well together. I'm a lover for steam carrot cakes like that, so do share with me where else I can find good ones if you know any.

Price: $4

Yummy Yummy Pheonix Claw

I have ate quite abit before I remember to take a picture of it. The chicken claws are deepfried before cooked in the sauce. It is spicy and not as sweet as many of those that I have tasted in other restaurants. I love the 2 small pieces of tau pok which are hidden under the claws.

Price: $3.50

Fried Beancurd Skin with shrimps

Its comes in 2 of the size shown in the picture. Its crispy on the outside and the fillings are generous.

Price: $4.50

Tasty Queen Size Siew Mai

It comes in 4 siew mai. In my opinion, the siew mai is nothing special. It is smaller in size as compare to the other restaurants.

Price: $4

Total Price: $25

They do not provide any official receipt. It does not comes with additional service charge or GST. It is a good place to come for affordable dim sum which is comparable with many of the sub standard dim sum out there. The culture here is to share table with some strangers. So if you do not mind having any privacy and you may even have chances making new friends here, this is the place for you. The queue is very long is you come at about 11am? I reached at about 10.30am and it was almost fully packed inside. But we were lucky that there were still 2 available seats so we did not need to queue at all. The food took some time before it came. Service is slow but that is because there are alot of customers but little staffs.

The Pelican Seafood Bar and Grill

Its always an enjoyable thing to do to enjoy a drink or dinner at One Fullerton where you can sit by the river admiring the scenery. We were lucky as the weather was cooling in the evening when we visited The Pelican.

We wanted to try the Pelican Platter one day but we were too full from some desserts in the afternoon and thus give it a miss and had something light instead.

Complimentary Bread

The bread was served hot with butter provided separately. I liked it when the bread are served warm.

Crumbled Bleu Cobb

I am not a salad lover but this is really one of the better ones that I have had before. Portion is consider small if you are just going to have that as your main. There are avocados, crispy chopped bacon, chopped tomatoes, eggs, chunks of blue cheese. Its very refreshing and the taste of the blue cheese gave the salad a salty taste which made it less boring.

Price: $14

Rhode Island Fried Squid

This is different from the usual calamari that we eat where squid rings are served. The squids are cut into bigger pieces which I personally prefer. It is topped with banana peppers which are cut and sliced into small pieces, green olives and capers.

Price: $18

Atlantic Linguini and Clams

This is a little spicy as chilli flakes have been added. So for those of you who do not take spicy food at all, you should skip this. It is cooked with white wine and the taste of the garlic give the pasta a stronger taste which kind of cover the taste of the white wine.

Price: $32

The downside about this place is not the food but the lighting when you are seated outdoor. Its quite dark that we can hardly see what we are eating and also because we are seated closer to the river side, it is difficult to get someone to attend to us when we needed to take our order or ask for the bill.

Rice and Fries

This restaurant is newly opened for about 2 months or so. Situated at Kembangan and the price is really affordable. Was introduced to this place by a friend as the place is open by her friend. My friend was singing praises about it and I know it is s MUST try after several read ups online too.

When we got there it was only about 6+pm and there were ample available seats. I thought this is pretty common as the restaurant has newly opened and may not have enough advertising to draw the crowds. But seriously I was very wrong when it was about 7+pm. I didn't realized how packed the place is until I heard the owner telling a customer that there is no available seat currently. When I turn round to peep, indeed all tables have been taken.

I have tried ice water with lemon and green apple before. This is the first time I'm trying ice water with strawberries and I must say that it is indeed very refreshing and with a strong taste of strawberries. Wise choice! The owner also shared with us that they do try out using other fruits as well.

Chicken Wings with Mango Chili Sauce

It comes in 2 drumlets and 2 chicken wings. The sauce is pretty good. A little sour but not very spicy. The chicken wings is quite normal to me though. But they do go well with the sauce.

Price: $4.80

Potato Wedges with Cheese Dip

The wedges is normal but I do love the cheese dip. I dipped the fries served together with my main with the cheese dip. Wedges are served pipping hot which is a good thing. But do eat it with care. The wedges are serve in a huge portion and some of the wedges are really huge. Totally worth the price paid for.

Price: $4

R&F Pork Chop

I like the pork chop as the meat is soft and not overcooked like most of those that I have eaten before. It comes with 2 large piece of pork and this is really filling. The garlic BBQ gravy tasted just like any BBQ sauce. I would prefer those mushroom kind of sauce instead.

Price: $13.80

Rosemary Chicken

The chicken is tender and is topped with mushroom ragout. The red wine sauce goes well with the meat. The fries served together will be better if it is a bit more special. For example, if it does comes with different flavor or perhaps huge thick cut deep fried potatoes.

Price: $9.80

Beef Ribeye Steak

According to my friend, the beef is nicely done and is one of the best seller here. It is served with potato gratin instead of fries. It is a huge piece of beef and I think it totally worth the price.

Price: $24.80

Lamb Shank

I didn't try the lamb shank so will not be able to describe the taste of it. But for those who loves eating lamb, it is a MUST try according to my friend. The meat is not tough and again the portion is huge. It is served with mash potato.

Price: $24.80

Potato Gratin

We ordered an extra portion of potato gratin as my friend highly recommended. And I have to say that he is right. It would be good to change the fries served with the pork chop and chicken, to potato gratin instead. However, it is not possible to change it but you can get a separate portion with just $3.

The total bill comes up to only $85 and there were 4 of us! This is really cheap. Looking at the receipt, you realized that there isn't any additional taxes imposed. So basically whatever that appears on the menu is the nett price.

As the place is newly opened, the owners do not have any helper in the kitchen other than just the chef. There is only a chef cooking which is why when the crowd comes, the customers may have to wait a little longer. But i have to say that the wait will be worthwhile.
