Maison Ikkoku

We chanced upon Maison Ikkoku when we were looking a coffee place after dinner . It is hard to miss as it is located just a few shops away from the famous Rich & Good Cake shop. Maison Ikkoku was very crowded on a Fri night but we were lucky enough to get a seat!

We ordered a flat white and cappuccino. I didnt quite enjoy the cappuccino as it was a tad too sour and bitter for my liking.

Rose Red velvet cake

The rose red velvet on the other hand was awesome! The rose frosting looked so inviting and tasted really good!

Price: $9

Table top made of cupboard door. Interesting!

Sandaime Bunji

I love the ambiance at Sandaime Bunji. We had the outdoor seat this time round and it feels just at good. They give you a authentic Japanese restaurant feeling. The staffs are very attentive and polite. The layout of the restaurant, the Japanese words on the menu, the number of Japanese customers just make you forget awhile that you are in Singapore.

We ordered 2 difference sets from the Dinner Set Menu. Each set comes with a chill beancurd that is really smooth and soft. It also comes with a small bowl of salad with great dressing.

Teriyaki Chicken Tsukune and U-men (Noodle) Set

I was wondering where the teriyaki chicken is when the set was served. I thought the 3 brown pieces of cake looked like thing are fishcakes. But realized they are my teriyaki chicken. Its really special as they don't use the usual slices of chicken then topped with the sauce. In fact these are deep fried minced chicken cakes with little teriyaki sauce on the surface. The U-men are different from the usual ramen that we have. The texture is a little more like soba. Served in clear shoyu soup based.

Price: $17.90

U-men (Noodle) SP Set

The set is more or less the same as the previous one. The U-men and chawamushi are the same. This set comes with 2 salmon sashimi. And 4 pieces of Edamame Fish cake.

Price: $19.80

Homemade Satsuma Age, Fish cake (Seafood)

The fish cake from the Salmon set was so good that we decided to order a separate share of seafood flavored fish cake. No regrets!

Price: $7.90

Zhen Ji (真记) Bak Chor Mee

There are so many delicious bak chor mee all over Singapore. And I would think that this is one that is worth recommending. Although not the most delicious one ever, it is worth giving it a try. Zhen Ji Bak Chor Mee is located in Bendemeer Market and Food Centre. Be prepare for at least a 15 mins queue.

I always add tomato sauce to my bak chor mee if the stall owners are not too grumpy and fussy. So I normally order dry mee pok with chilli and get them to add in tomato sauce too. It taste better and in my own opinion, it taste better. The mee pok at Zhen Ji is springy and as you can see that it comes with 2 fried wanton, 2 meat balls, fish cake, fish dumpling and mushrooms. The used the gravy from the mushroom and the stall owner added alot of them and mixed with the mee pok.

Liang Zhao Ji (梁照记) Duck Porridge Duck Rice

There is always a long queue to this very normal looking stall selling braised duck rice and porridge at Whampoa Market. It is located just next to the very famous Hoover Rojak. I have eaten this for many times and I have to say that the standard fluctuates. The queuing time is about can goes up to 30 mins easily during peak hour.

I prefer the porridge to the rice because it is not too watery and I can still taste the texture of the grains. It will be good to go with some duck liver, gizzard and braised egg. Remember to stir well as most of the sauce in the porridge is at the bottom of the bowl. So stir hard and evenly till the porridge turns a little brown before eating.

Basically the taste of the duck and the sauce are pretty standard. But not the rice. The rice that I have tasted on this particular day is extremely hard. It feels as though the rice is not thoroughly cooked. But there are times when the rice are much softer.

Bistro Soori

We have always wanted to visit here and have been talking about it for the longest time for the PANDAN SOUFFLE! And finally.... here we are!!!

We came during lunch time and ordered the set lunch just like what almost everybody did. The set is going at $39.90 each and I feel that it is good value for money. Cost of dinner can be a little steep though. They didn't have alot of seats in the restaurant, so I strongly suggest reservations to be make.

Starters: Scallops, Pistachio Pesto, Arugula, Vinegar Pear Gelee, Truffle Vinaigrette

Though the colour of the sauce doesn't look quite appetizing, the taste of the whole dish is actually fabulous. I can eat many more plates of this. The pistachio flavored sauce goes well with the not so strong truffle taste.

Starters: Pan Grilled Miso Scallops, Mango Miso Puree, Mixed Green, Balsamic Reduction

The other starter that we ordered for the 2nd set is another scallop dish. The scallops are grilled just nice. It is soft on the inside and a little burnt on the outside. The mango miso puree taste pretty refreshing but I can't remember tasting at miso.

Espresso cup of soup

I like the soup. I usually prefer clear soup like this than those creamy ones. This mushroom soup is served in a small espresso cup and it comes together in the set.

Main Course: Cured Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Red Cabbage, Grain Mustard, Raisin, Pear

The both of us had the pork tenderloin and we didn't regret the choice at all. As you can see from the picture, the tenderloin still has a little redness in the center. That's what we usually see when steak are serve since people don't usually like their steak to be fully cooked. Since I don't eat beef, this is definitely a great substitute. The pork is so soft and juicy. It goes perfectly well with the red cabbage which tasted just fine by itself too.

Dessert: Caramelized Banana Puff, Rum Syrup, Vanilla Ice Cream

I find that the pastry is a little rich in taste, a little buttery. But the caramelized banana taste great.

Dessert: Pandan Souffle, Cookie, Strawberry Compote

We love souffle and I think many people do. It is always good to taste different flavor of souffle. Pandan was definitely good and this was also properly prepared, raising to a height just nice.
