Hua Ting

This is my first time at Hua Ting after reading countless of reviews on it, both good and bad. I am eager to know how the dim sum taste like and have also ordered some of the more popular dishes.

Hua Ting Signature baked chicken and mango tarts

I love eating tarts. All kinds of tarts but am also afraid of the overly rich butter taste if it is not done properly. There are some tarts that the crust is just overly rich with butter and I will not be able to finish everything and it will sometimes makes me feel nauseous. These chicken tarts are real good stuffs. It does have the buttery taste (which is important to have), but not too rich. So it is fine to even eat 2 or 3 of them. The flaky crust taste just as good by itself even without the filling.

Price: $4.50

Steamed Seafood and Abalone Dumpling

I feel that the skin for this dumpling is a little too thick. will be better if it is thinner. It really does come with a tiny slice of abalone which basically is not really important. But if you would like to have a substitute for the usual har kow and siew mai, no harm giving it a try.

Price: $6.00

Steamed custard bun with salted egg yolk

This seems to be a MUST order dish whenever I'm out having dim sum. I love the feeling when I take the first bite and the watery custard oozes out into my mouth. I like those with salted egg yolk as it will  have this sweet and salted taste. The one at Hua Ting is worth ordering. Great texture and great taste!

Price: $4.20

Steamed Beancurd stuffed with fish paste

I was craving for all the steamed dishes that day. Thus I have ordered this to try. Actually I do like ordering different types of dim sum and try not to stick to the usual ones everytime. Well I guess this is a little normal. It's just like any yong tau foo that you can find outside.

Price: $4.20

Steamed beancurd skin roll with minced pork in oyster sauce

Minced pork, carrot, vegetables are wrapped in the beancurd skin then soaked with oyster sauce. As you can see, they are not stingy with the filling at all.

Price: $4.20

Steamed carrot cake with conpoy

This is basically the usual carrot cake that people order when they have dim sum. But I guessed most people will order the pan fried one. This is not exactly the steam carrot cake I am looking for.

Price: $4.20

I would say that the overall taste for the food is pretty alright and I will come back again to Hua Ting for  dim sum. The price is really reasonable too considering the fact that this is a restaurant in a hotel.

Victor's Kitchen

Before I start with the review for Victor's Kitchen, I have to apologize for the crappy photos taken. As we were in a rush to somewhere, I forgot to take picture of how the dim sum looks like before we started eating. Thus by the time we remember, we have already eaten some.

Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun

It comes in 3. And yes the sweet and salted custard oozes out when you bite on the bun. The bun is soft and well steamed. It is good but nothing special in  my opinion.

Price: $4

Steam chicken with Chinese wine

This is not the usual dish that we see from most restaurants. So other than the usual steam pork ribs, they have this steam chicken. I quite like it as the meat is well marinated with a tint of wine, steamed with wolf berries.

Price: $3

Scallop, Sausages carrot cake with XO sauce

Ever since dim joy closed down, I was unable to find a place where steam carrot cake is served. They have it here and it is good. Although it does look a little dry from this picture but it is not dry at all. It comes with a small serving of XO sauce which is served separately and yes they do go well together. I'm a lover for steam carrot cakes like that, so do share with me where else I can find good ones if you know any.

Price: $4

Yummy Yummy Pheonix Claw

I have ate quite abit before I remember to take a picture of it. The chicken claws are deepfried before cooked in the sauce. It is spicy and not as sweet as many of those that I have tasted in other restaurants. I love the 2 small pieces of tau pok which are hidden under the claws.

Price: $3.50

Fried Beancurd Skin with shrimps

Its comes in 2 of the size shown in the picture. Its crispy on the outside and the fillings are generous.

Price: $4.50

Tasty Queen Size Siew Mai

It comes in 4 siew mai. In my opinion, the siew mai is nothing special. It is smaller in size as compare to the other restaurants.

Price: $4

Total Price: $25

They do not provide any official receipt. It does not comes with additional service charge or GST. It is a good place to come for affordable dim sum which is comparable with many of the sub standard dim sum out there. The culture here is to share table with some strangers. So if you do not mind having any privacy and you may even have chances making new friends here, this is the place for you. The queue is very long is you come at about 11am? I reached at about 10.30am and it was almost fully packed inside. But we were lucky that there were still 2 available seats so we did not need to queue at all. The food took some time before it came. Service is slow but that is because there are alot of customers but little staffs.

Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck (Asia Square)

Dim Sum at Imperial Treasure Super Peking duck at Asia Square.

BBQ Pork Bun

Normally I do not order Char Siew Pao when I have dim sum but I feel that it is a must try at imperial treasure. The bun is so soft and the char siew inside is so well marinated. It would taste even better if  the filling is more.

 Price: $3.60

Banana roll with red bean paste

The first piece was wonderful with the great combination of the banana and red bean paste taste. However it felt a bit too oily after the 2nd piece. It would be better if the crust is thinner.

Price: $3.60

Siew Mai

The siew mai is pretty normal. Noting special about them.

Price: $4.80

BBQ Pork Rice Roll

The chee cheong fun was ok. The skin is thin but not those extremely thin kind. The BBQ pork wrapped in it is kind of little. I thought it will be better if the filling can be more generous.

Price: $5.50

Beancurd roll with taro and pork

This is something special. There is this big piece of yam and some pork wrapped with beancurd skin. It comes in 3 and soaked in some broth. It is light and this is the kind of dish I would prefer while eating dim sum.

Price: $4.80

Steam custard bun

Basically a dim sum meal will not be consider a proper one without ending it with steam custard bun! I have to say that the custard bun here is one of the better ones that I have tasted. You have to eat it with care because the watery custard oozes out of the bun can scald your tongue! The important part of the steam custard bun is that the taste of the filling has to be sweet and salty at the same time and of cause it has to be watery enough.

Price: $4.20

Eventually we cancelled the egg tarts that we ordered because we were running out of time and it is time to get back to work. Will try that out the next time.

East Ocean Teochew Restaurant

This is probably the 576252198209th time that we are eating here and of course out of the many times, a huge percentage of it are dedicated for their dim sum. This is the best in terms of taste and of course the price, after Dim Joy has closed down.

East Ocean is a typical Chinese restaurant where the staffs would push the dim sum trolley around and shouting out what are the dim sum they have for each of their trolley or tray. It feels as though you are in Hong Kong as the aunties will start shouting around in Cantonese.

   Steamed Cuttlefish with Curry

This has got to be my favorite at East Ocean. The cuttlefish is so soft and tender and it also adsorb the curry sauce well.

Price: $5.80

Steamed Ha Kau

The prawn is big and the skin of the ha kau is thin which allows you to taste the the sweetness of the prawn. It comes in 4.

Price: $5.80

Steamed BBQ Pork Rice Roll

Price: $5.80

Steamed Custard Bun

The custard egg yolk ooze out of the steamed bun when you take a bite. Have to be caution as it may be very hot when it is first served. It also comes in 4 and the size of each custard bun is pretty small. But it is good as your stomach will have more space for different variety of dim sum.

Price: $4.80

Steamed Siew Mai

Price: $4.80

Deep-Fried Beancurd Skin

Price: $5.80

Mini Egg Tarts

Price: $5.80

$52 for 2 pax is quite ok and it is really filling. We had our dinner on the same day at only 10.30pm because we were so full from the lunch.
